Chief minister of Tamil Nadu, leader to many Tamils and 'Amma' to millions, J.Jayalalithaa died on Monday after undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai for 73 days. She was 68.


who was admitted to hospital on September 22 with complaints of fever and dehydration, suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening. On Monday, Jayalalithaa continued to be very critical and was on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and life support systems. And the end came at 11.30pm.


In a statement issued after midnight on Tuesday, Apollo Hospitals said: "It is with indescribable grief we announce the sad demise of our esteemed honourable chief minister of Tamil Nadu Puratchi Thalavi Amma at 11.30pm today (5.12.2016). 

Our honourable Selvi J Jayalalithaa was admitted on 22.9.2016 with complaints of fever and dehydration and underlying comorbidities. The honourable chief minister subsequently recovered substantially to be able to take food orally.


"On this basis honorable chief minister was shifted from the advanced critical care unit to the high dependency unit where her health and vitals continued to improve under the close monitoring by our expert panel of specialists."


It said, "Unfortunately the honourable chief minister suffered a massive cardiac arrest on December, 4 2016, even while our intensivist was in her room. The honourable chief minister was immediately administered resuscitation (CPR) and provided the ECMO support within the hour. ECMO is the most advanced treatment currently available internationally. Every possible clinical attempt was made to sustain her revival. However, despite our best efforts, our honourable chief minister's underlying conditions rendered her unable to recover and she passed away at 11.30pm today (5.12.2016)."
 



Arrangements were being made for the public to pay last respects to the departed soul. Jayalalitha’s Last rites will be held at 4.30pm on 06.12.2016, Tuesday.


The Tamil Nadu government tonight announced a seven-day State Mourning from tomorrow in view of the demise of Chief Minister  Jayalalithaa.

During the period, the national flag on all government buildings will be flown at half-mast. No official entertainment will also be held during this period, Chief Secretary P Rama Mohana Rao said in a notification.

The government also declared a three-day holiday for all educational institutions in the state.

The neighbouring union territory of Puducherry announced a holiday for all government offices and educational institutions tomorrow as a mark of respect to Jayalalithaa.


O Pannerselvam takes oath as new CM

Senior AIADMK MLA, Finance Minister Mr.O Panneerselvam was sworn-in as the new chief minister of the state Tamilnadu by Governor Vidyasagar Rao at an event in Raj Bhawan.
